USA v Iran Result: 2022 FIFA World Cup win sends USMNT into Round of 16 after Christian Pulisic strike

By | November 30, 2022

The United States are through to the Round of 16 with a 1-0 victory over Iran. A fine team goal finished off by Christian Pulisic was enough to see them win the match. After Sergino Dest’s cross, Pulisic threw himself at the ball, scored and then collided with Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand and had to be retrieved at half-time by Brenden Aaronson. From there, the team managed to maintain its strong defensive form even with starter Cameron Carter-Vickers in place of defensive stalwart Walker Zimmerman. The team failed to score a safe goal, allowing Iran to pressure late on, but the lone goal was all they needed to advance.

Then it will be a clash with the Netherlands on Saturday, December 3rd and they may not have Pulisic or Josh Sargent for that match after both left with injuries. Sargent especially will be worrying as Haji Wright hasn’t looked like a regular striker for the national team, but Jesus Ferrerira has yet to record a minute of play during this World Cup. But despite injuries – and a poor performance from Shaq Moore – the team dug deep and managed to reach the round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups.

It’s an emotional time for the team after missing out on the 2018 World Cup, but it’s important to remember that the job isn’t over. The attack goes flat when Weston McKennie leaves the field cannot continue against the Netherlands when Cody Gakpo is lurking but the building blocks are there to bring them down as the defense did not allow an open play goal during the FIFA World Cup. world so far.

Here are some lessons from the match

pulistic power

The United States has been great in starting games during the World Cup and this game was no different. Antonee Robinson and Dest were advancing easily, but Sargent and Tim Weah weren’t nearing the end of their service. But Pulisic was excited enough to score. Started by McKennie from deep with a fine pass, we saw the best of Dest as he charged forward and headed in a superb cross for Pulisic. Nothing stopped him from putting the ball in the back of the net, including the Iranian goalkeeper.

While Pulisic walked away with an abdominal injury that sent him to the hospital, wing depth is something the USMNT has plenty of. Gio Reyna has been used sparingly during this World Cup, but if Pulisic can’t make it, he will be needed against the Netherlands as one of the team’s few unpredictable players. Aaronson was a good pick to close things out in order to provide defensive astuteness and stabilize things, but to start an elimination match, Reyna would be the way to go.

US depth is a concern

This match is one that exposed some fringe players on the team. Shaq Moore had to raise his hands several times to say my bad when he was beaten to the flank, but Zimmerman and Carter-Vickers were there to clean things up. If Dest can’t make 90 against Holland, it’s time to turn to another teenager in Joe Scally, because the team knows what they have in Moore and he’s not good enough at the moment. Experience is important if Moore is going to be a depth option in the future, but he’s hard to count on now.

The same goes for Haji Wright, who didn’t offer enough lead on the line. Late in the match, Wright had a chance to dribble to the corner effectively ending the game, but instead he attempted a shot giving Iran possession to go down the pitch. On another day, the VAR review he caused might have led to a penalty. Jesus Ferreira hasn’t played a minute at this World Cup, which is surprising as he was involved in qualifying, but he needs to start on Saturday if Sargent can’t make it. Ferreira does many of the same things to drag the defenders which allows the wingers space in attack and this will be necessary as the Netherlands have not been disciplined defensively during this World Cup.

Credit granted at maturity

Gregg Berhalter made some massive calls during this World Cup. Not only for leaving Zack Steffen and Ricardo Pepi out of the cast, but also for starting Sargent, Ream and Matt Turner. All three were big parts of why the team is in the Round of 16 now, as was Carter-Vickers, who was a surprise inclusion in the lineup against Iran. While the job is not done, Berhalter’s plan has come to fruition during this World Cup and he will have more calls to make if Pulisic and Sargent are unable to make it.
