O FIFA World Cup 2022 continued Wednesday with Group D at the forefront. Australia (2-0-1) defeated Denmark (0-1-2), by 1-0, in a tense game at Al Janoub Stadium, in Al Wakrah, Qatar. With the victory, Australia moves on to the knockout stage and Denmark is eliminated from the World Cup.
The match was a scoreless draw until the 60th minute, when Australian Mathew Leckie scored a goal. It turned out to be key, considering at the time that Australia would have been knocked out of the tournament if the game remained tied and Tunisia maintained their lead over France.

setting the stage
Australia are looking to build on the momentum they gained after winning their last group stage match. Australia will progress to the knockout stage if they beat Denmark or draw Denmark and France win or draw Tunisia. On the other hand, Denmark is looking for its first victory in the tournament after a draw and a defeat. A win would likely put Denmark through to the knockout stages, as they need France to win or draw.

They’ll stay up late in Australia for this one
The Wednesday match (or in Australia, the Thursday match) started at 2am local time in Australia. But with the chance of progressing to the knockout stage hanging in the balance, fans in Australia want to stay behind to support their team.
Halftime: Both teams still looking for the first goal
Australia and Denmark struggled to find the back of the net in the first half, although both teams combined five shots on target. The goalless half-time draw favored Australia, who would advance to the knockout stages if the result held.
Denmark controlled possession for two-thirds of the game, however, a trend that could favor them in the second half.
